Overtone Challenges

Single Overtone ID

Prompted with the fundamental frequency, you will hear an overtone, and you must identify which overtone it is (by the ratio of their frequencies). If you get bored with the default settings, try increasing the number of overtones from 8 to 16, and try it in hard mode (where you will not be prompted with the fundamental frequency, but rather, a different harmonic).

Multiple Overtone ID

This version of the overtone challenge is generally more difficult. Here, you will hear multiple overtones played together to create a single texture of sound. You must identify each and every overtone that makes up that sound. Try it on easy mode (where the fundamental never moves) first so you can get a feel for where those overtones will be. Then, as you ramp up the difficulty, you'll noticed that in some scenarios, it's just pure luck. You might hear overtones #2, #4, and #6, and how do you know that they're not #1, #2, and #3? You don't. Good luck!
